The Google Pixel 9 Pro stands out in the crowded smartphone market with its smaller size, featuring a 6.3-inch display. This is smaller than many high-end smartphones, which typically have 6.7-inch or larger screens.

Despite its compactness the Pixel 9 Pro does not compromise on design, retaining the same bold aesthetics as its larger sibling, the Pixel 9 Pro XL.

The phone’s design includes flat aluminum sides and a frosted glass back, giving it a premium feel. The unique camera bump on the back adds to its look.

Weighing 199 grams, the Pixel 9 Pro is relatively easy to handle with one hand, which is a huge advantage for users who prefer smaller devices without sacrificing flagship performance.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro is equipped with a 6.3-inch QHD+ OLED display with a pixel density of 495 ppi. The screen supports a 120Hz refresh rate making it ideal for smooth scrolling and enhanced gaming experiences.

The display is bright, fast and offers crisp visuals, rivaling some of the best screens available on the market. It is designed to perform well under various lighting conditions including direct sunlight.

At the heart of the Google Pixel 9 Pro is Google’s Tensor G4 chip supported by 16GB of RAM. This combination ensures that the phone is snappy and responsive, handling multitasking and demanding applications with ease. The Google Pixel 9 Pro comes with multiple storage options, ranging from 128GB to 1TB.

While the Google Pixel 9 Pro excels in general performance, it doesn’t quite match the raw power of some Android rivals equipped with Qualcomm’s top chips especially in gaming. However it remains a strong performer in everyday use and AI-powered tasks.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro has impressive battery life, lasting over 48 hours on a single charge with moderate use. This includes about seven hours of active screen time, which is a mix of 5G and Wi-Fi usage.

The device supports fast charging, reaching a full charge in just over 80 minutes using a 27W USB-C charger.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro features a versatile camera system with a 50MP main sensor, a 48MP ultrawide lens and a 48MP 5x telephoto lens.

The telephoto camera includes an in-sensor zoom feature effectively offering a 10x optical zoom. This capability sets the Google Pixel 9 Pro apart from many of its competitors in the small phone category. The camera excels in challenging conditions such as low light and motion.

The AI-powered features enhance image quality, making it easier to capture stunning photos in various scenarios. The Add Me feature is an addition, allowing users to blend two photos to include the photographer in group shots. This feature works well in most situations but requires some practice to master.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro is one of the first devices to leverage Google’s Gemini Nano AI models. The most impressive is the Gemini Live experience, which enables a fully conversational AI assistant.

This assistant can engage in back-and-forth discussions, remember previous interactions and provide personalized information.

To fully utilize the Gemini Live feature, users need to subscribe to the Gemini Advanced service, which costs £19 per month. A one-year subscription is bundled with the purchase of the Google Pixel 9 Pro.

Additional AI tools include the Screenshots app, which organizes and makes screenshots searchable and the Pixel Studio app, which generates images from text prompts. The Google Photos Magic Editor enhances images by automatically reframing or expanding them using generative AI.

The Google Pixel 9 Pro ships with Android 14 and is guaranteed to receive seven years of software support including an upgrade to Android 15 in the fall. This support makes the Google Pixel 9 Pro one of the most future-proof devices available.

Google has incorporated at least 18% recycled materials into the Google Pixel 9 Pro including recycled aluminum, plastic, rare earth elements and tin. The Google Pixel 9 Pro is designed to be repairable by both Google and third-party shops with genuine replacement parts available from iFixit. However the repairability score is moderate with the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL receiving a five out of ten.

The Pixel 9 Pro is priced at £999 placing it firmly in the high-end smartphone category. The Pixel 9 Pro is cheaper than its larger sibling, the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL.

It competes directly with other flagship devices like the Samsung Galaxy S24 and the iPhone 15 Pro, both of which are similarly priced.
