All staff members of the award-winning publisher Annapurna Interactive have resigned. This event was first reported by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier. The resignation of the entire staff follows an unsuccessful attempt to spin off the video game division into an independent company.

The leadership of Annapurna Interactive including top executives Nathan Gary, Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella resigned from their positions last week.
This event was already significant, but the situation escalated when the remaining employees of the division, about 25 collectively decided to follow suit and resign from the company as well.
The resignations leave Annapurna Interactive in an uncertain state, with no clear point of contact for developers or partners reliant on the publisher’s services.
The trouble at Annapurna Interactive began when Nathan Gary, the division’s president and other key figures within the company proposed a spin-off from Annapurna Pictures.
The intention was to form an independent entity dedicated solely to the gaming side of the business. Negotiations with Annapurna founder Megan Ellison broke down reportedly because Ellison withdrew her support for the idea.
This decision was a series of events that led to the resignation of not only Gary but also nearly 30 other staff members, dismantling the gaming division’s entire workforce.
According to reports from Bloomberg and IGN, the staff found it impossible to continue under the existing corporate structure after the failed spin-off attempt.
In a statement to Bloomberg, Gary and the resigned employees expressed how difficult the decision was.
The root cause of the mass resignation is from a failed attempt by Annapurna Interactive’s leadership to spin the company into an independent entity.
Nathan Gary and his team were reportedly negotiating with Annapurna Pictures’ founder, Megan Ellison, in hopes of separating the video game division from its parent company.
The goal was to establish Annapurna Interactive as a fully independent publisher capable of steering its own course in the gaming industry.
These negotiations took an unexpected turn when Ellison withdrew from the talks, dashing the hopes of the Annapurna Interactive leadership.
With their efforts to achieve independence thwarted, Gary and his fellow executives made the decision to resign.
Hector Sanchez has emerged as the sole remaining executive at Annapurna Interactive. Sanchez, who played an important role in launching the publisher in 2016, has had returned to the company after a period spent at Epic Games.
As the new president of Annapurna Interactive, Sanchez now faces the huge task of managing the transition and ensuring the publisher’s future.
In a to Bloomberg News, Megan Ellison expressed her commitment to supporting Annapurna Interactive’s partners during this period. She addressed that the company’s top priority would be continuing to honor its existing agreements with developers and publishing partners.
Despite the loss of its core team, Ellison’s comments suggest that Annapurna Interactive will continue to operate and release games under its label.

One of the concerns surrounding the mass resignation is the fallout for Annapurna Interactive’s development partners. The publisher has established relationships with several prominent indie studios including Ivy Road, Blendo Games and Mobius Digital.
These studios have relied on Annapurna for publishing support and the sudden departure of the company’s entire staff has left many in the industry scrambling for answers.
According to Bloomberg, the exodus has caused chaos among the publisher’s partners, with uncertainty looming large over the future of current and upcoming projects.
Without a stable point of contact within Annapurna Interactive, these developers may face delays or complications in bringing their games to market.
Since its inception in 2016, Annapurna Interactive has built reputation as a publisher of critically acclaimed indie games.
Titles like Stray, Outer Wilds and What Remains of Edith Finch have earned praise, cementing the publisher’s status as a leading force in the indie gaming scene.
Stray was a breakout hit, selling millions of copies within its first month of release and winning prestigious industry awards.
Other celebrated titles published by Annapurna include Cocoon, Neon White and Storyteller. The publisher’s success lies in its ability to showcase unique, narrative-driven games that push the boundaries of storytelling in interactive media.
The abrupt resignation of Annapurna Interactive’s staff questions about the company’s ability to maintain its legacy of quality in the indie gaming space.
Annapurna Interactive founded its own internal game development studio in 2022. The fate of this studio remains unclear in the wake of the resignations.
While Megan Ellison has stated that existing projects will continue to be supported, there has been no official word on whether the internal development team will be affected by the mass departure of the publisher’s staff.
Similarly, the future of 24 Bit Games, a South African support studio that has worked with Annapurna Interactive. With the core team at Annapurna Interactive no longer in place, it remains to be seen how these internal and external teams will navigate the transition.
In 2019 and 2020, the publisher experienced well-documented struggles, which led to a scaling back of its operations in film production.

The company had also published Lorelei and the Laser Eyes and Open Roads.
