One of the upgrades in the PlayStation 5 Pro is its enhanced GPU. With 67% more Compute Units than the current PS5, this upgraded GPU allows the console to handle much more detailed and visually complex images.

The console also has 28% faster memory. The PlayStation 5 Pro can deliver up to 45% faster rendering, meaning games will look smoother and run more efficiently.

Ray tracing is a feature that mimics how light behaves in real life, casting accurate reflections and refractions. The PlayStation 5 Pro enhances ray tracing to operate at double or triple the speed of the original PS5, delivering more dynamic lighting and more realistic environments.

With this improved ray tracing, reflections on surfaces like water or windows, as well as shadows, look incredibly lifelike.

Another feature of the PlayStation 5 Pro is the introduction of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling technology. This uses machine learning to enhance image quality, making games appear crisper and sharper by adding detail that wasn’t visible before.

Whether you’re exploring lush forests or engaging in racing, the image clarity with this feature is stunning, an ultra-realistic gaming experience.

The PlayStation 5 Pro continues to support backward compatibility for PS4 games allowing players to enjoy over 8,500 titles from the previous generation.

One of the most exciting features for gamers with an extensive PS4 library is the PlayStation 5 Pro’s Game Boost. This feature improves the performance of older PS4 and PS5 games, stabilizing frame rates and enhancing graphics.

Certain PS4 games will receive enhanced image quality, improving the resolution and making older games look better than ever on the PlayStation 5 Pro.

One area where the PlayStation 5 Pro remains unchanged is its SSD. The original PS5 came with an ultra-fast SSD, which reduced loading times compared to previous consoles.

Sony has not mentioned any improvements in storage speeds for the PS5 Pro leading many to believe it retains the same PCIe 4.0 SSD technology.

While faster SSDs, such as PCIe 5.0 are available, they would not provide enough performance increase to justify the additional cost.

Memory is where the PlayStation 5 Pro sees a moderate upgrade. Like the PS5, the Pro features 16GB of GDDR6 RAM, but this time around, the memory speed has been increased by 28%, resulting in a bandwidth of around 560 GB/s compared to the 440 GB/s on the base PS5.

This faster memory will help the PlayStation 5 Pro achieve better performance at higher resolutions and enable more stable frame rates in demanding games.

The PlayStation 5 Pro introduces the latest in wireless technology with support for Wi-Fi 7 in regions where this standard is available. This ensures faster and more stable internet connections, making online multiplayer gaming smoother than ever.

For players who enjoy fast-paced games, the PlayStation 5 Pro supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), which reduces screen tearing and ensures smoother gameplay by matching the display’s refresh rate with the game’s frame rate.

While 8K displays are still rare, the PlayStation 5 Pro is future-proof with support for 8K gaming. This allows the console to take full advantage of the next wave of ultra-high-definition displays.

Many game developers have embraced the power of the PS5 Pro and several existing PS5 games will receive free software updates to enhance their performance on the new console.

These games will be labeled as PS5 Pro Enhanced and will take advantage of the Pro’s features like improved frame rates and ray tracing.

Games like Alan Wake 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Horizon Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7 are among the many titles expected to get updates for PS5 Pro compatibility.

The PlayStation 5 Pro retains the same height as the original PS5 but has been tweaked to accommodate the higher performance specs. The width matches the current PS5 model.

The PlayStation 5 Pro comes as a disc-less console, but players who want physical media can purchase the current Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive separately.

The PlayStation 5 Pro works with all existing PS5 accessories including the PlayStation VR2, DualSense Edge, PlayStation Portal, Pulse Elite, Pulse Explore and the Access controller.

The user interface on the PlayStation 5 Pro remains identical to the current PS5. The network services will remain consistent between the PS5 and PS5 Pro.

Pre-orders for the PlayStation 5 Pro will begin on September 26, 2024, through PlayStation’s official website and at select retailers. On October 10, 2024, pre-orders will be available at additional participating retailers.

The PlayStation 5 Pro is set to launch on November 7, 2024, just in time for the holiday season. The console will be available in key markets globally and you can expect it to be stocked by most major electronics retailers.

The PlayStation 5 Pro comes with a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR and ¥119,980 JPY. This price includes a 2TB SSD, a DualSense wireless controller and a pre-installed copy of Astro’s Playroom.

If you’re a casual gamer who already owns a PS5, the upgrade to the PS5 Pro may not be necessary. The 45% increase in GPU performance will make a difference in visually demanding games, but the improvements aren’t large enough to warrant a switch for everyone. The base PS5 is still capable of delivering stunning graphics and fast performance for most games.
