OpenAI Releases New AI Model Called OpenAI o1 aka Strawberry

OpenAI has unveiled OpenAI o1. new AI model is officially named “o1” and is commonly referred to as Strawberry. The o1 model is integrated into OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus, making it accessible to developers and scientists from September 14, 2024.

OpenAI has trained the OpenAI o1 model to think through complex tasks before responding. This ability makes it more effective in handling multistep challenges particularly in fields like coding, math and science.

The model is designed to think about different strategies, evaluate them and refine its responses as a human would.

The OpenAI o1 model has shows remarkable performance in academic areas. OpenAI claims that it can solve math problems on par with PhD students and has been tested against international academic benchmarks in physics, chemistry and biology.

The OpenAI o1 model is not focused on speed but rather on delivering accurate, well-reasoned responses. Unlike GPT-4 and previous models that quickly generate answers based on patterns, O1 takes more time to think through its answers. This design choice means it often provides more reliable outputs, though at a slower pace.

OpenAI has trained the o1 model using a completely new optimization algorithm and dataset specifically tailored for this purpose.

While OpenAI has not revealed the exact specifics, the training has allowed the model to approach problems in a more structured, human-like way.

One of the methodologies used in OpenAI o1’s training is reinforcement learning. This method allows the model to learn from rewards and penalties, helping it to develop strategies for solving complex problems step by step. This process mimics how humans approach difficult challenges by experimenting with different solutions and learning from mistakes.

A major innovation in OpenAI o1 is its ability to break down problems using a chain of thought method. Much like humans, the model processes queries by going through a sequence of reasoning steps.

This feature enhances its ability to handle problems that require logical progression rather than just spitting out a direct answer.

One of the strengths of OpenAI o1 is its ability to reason through complex queries in coding and math. However, it is not as strong when it comes to answering questions that require factual knowledge about the world. GPT-4 is still more capable in providing general knowledge-based responses.

OpenAI o1 currently lacks several features available in GPT-4. For instance, it cannot browse the web or process files and images.

It only supports text-based prompts. Users looking for a model that can analyze images or surf the web for real-time information will have to continue using GPT-4.

Since OpenAI o1 is designed to think before responding, it is slower than models like GPT-4. While it may take longer to answer, the model compensates for this by providing more accurate and well-thought-out responses especially for complex tasks.

OpenAI o1 Mini is optimized for speed and affordability. It is 80% cheaper than the o1 preview, making it cost-effective option for developers who need to generate or debug code quickly but don’t require the reasoning capabilities of the larger model.

OpenAI o1 Mini excels at coding tasks. It is particularly effective for developers looking for a budget-friendly solution that still provides robust problem-solving and debugging features.

In the API, OpenAI o1 preview costs $15 per 1 million input tokens and $60 per 1 million output tokens. This is higher than the pricing for GPT-4, which costs $5 for 1 million input tokens and $15 for 1 million output tokens.

OpenAI o1 is currently available to ChatGPT Plus and Team users with a subscription cost of $20 per month. The o1 model comes with weekly rate limits, allowing users to send 30 messages for o1 preview and 50 messages for o1 Mini.

OpenAI is working on increasing these limits and plans to allow ChatGPT to automatically select the best model for each query in the future.

While the full OpenAI o1 model is available only to paid users, OpenAI is planning to roll out access to o1 Mini for all ChatGPT Free users. No specific timeline has been provided for when this will be available.

For now, the model can only process text inputs. It lacks the ability to handle multimedia tasks such as interpreting images or videos.

Given the high cost of using the o1 model in API form, it may not be the most accessible option for smaller developers or businesses.

As AI technology progresses, the cost of reasoning models like o1 is expected to decrease, but for now, it remains an investment.

OpenAI admits that the o1 model is not free from hallucinations. While it hallucinates less than previous models, this problem is not entirely eliminated. The company continues to work on improving this issue in future updates.

The pace at which OpenAI o1 processes queries might be a drawback for users who prioritize speed over accuracy. However, for tasks that require careful consideration such as complex coding and math problems, this trade-off is generally worth it.
