Canon has announced the EOS C400, an upgrade designed to cater to professional filmmakers. The camera features a full-frame 6K sensor, advanced internal recording capabilities and a host of other specifications aimed at enhancing both image quality and usability. Priced at $7,999, the EOS C400 is set to be available from September 2024.

The EOS C400 has a 26.7MP full-frame back-illuminated CMOS sensor. Capable of recording in 6K resolution (6000 x 3164) at up to 60P in Cinema RAW Light format.
The sensor is optimized for low-light performance with an extended ISO range up to 102,400 and triple-base ISO settings at 800, 3200, and 12,800.
Internal recording in Cinema RAW Light, XF-AVC, XF-HEVC S, and XF-AVC S formats. Cinema RAW Light allows for 12-bit recording at up to 2160Mbps in RAW HQ mode with different resolutions for Super16, Super35, and full-frame modes.
XF-AVC and XF-AVC S offer 10-bit 4:2:2 recording in DCI 4K, UHD 4K and proxies up to 180P. XF-HEVC S includes 10-bit 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 options supporting resolutions from 2K to 4K and frame rates up to 180P.
The camera has 16 stops of dynamic range suitable for high-quality low-light recording. Equipped with a DIGIC DV7 processor.
Utilizes Dual Pixel CMOS AF II covering 100% of the frame. Features advanced AI for human and animal tracking including face, eye, and body recognition. Digital Image Stabilization (IS) works alongside lens-based optical stabilization.
The RF mount allows the use of Canon’s RF lenses and adapts to PL-mount lenses via an adapter. Includes a built-in power terminal for lens accessories like the Canon RF24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z.
Equipped with a variety of ports, 12G/6G/3G-SDI, full-size HDMI, USB-C, Ethernet, Mini-XLR and more. Supports IP control for remote operation and live streaming over Ethernet and Wi-Fi.
Compact box-style body measuring 5.6 x 5.3 x 5.3 inches (142 x 135 x 135 mm) and weighing 3.4 lbs (1.55 kg).
Features multiple mounting points including a Multi-function shoe for power and data connection to accessories.
Includes a 3.5” touchscreen LCD that can be attached via a versatile mount for flexible positioning.
Offers two Mini-XLR inputs, one 3.5mm stereo input and the ability to record up to four audio tracks in 24-bit linear PCM. Enhanced with color-coded audio level meters for easier adjustment.
Powered by Canon BP-A30N/60N batteries, compatible with previous Canon cinema camera batteries. External accessory support includes V-Mount/Gold Mount battery plates and expansion modules expected from third-party manufacturers.
Control buttons are illuminated for better usability in low light. Features a new Gyro with a level display for precise leveling.
Built-in ND filters provide up to 10 stops of filtration. Supports anamorphic lenses with de-squeeze options of 2x, 1.8x, and 1.3x.
Interval recording mode and frame recording for stop-motion animations. Compatible with virtual production workflows in Unreal Engine and Adobe After Effects via Canon plugins. Supports 3D VR content creation when paired with Canon’s RF 5.2mm f/2.8 L Dual Fisheye lens.

Offers remote control options via web browser, smartphone apps and remote control units over Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Enables FTP transfers and supports various IP live-streaming protocols.
The EOS C400 is capable of recording in 6K up to 60 frames per second (fps) in Cinema RAW Lite format. This offers high resolution and flexibility in post-production.
It also supports 4K recording up to 120 fps using XF-AVC and XF-HEVC formats, ensuring smooth and detailed high-speed footage.
The camera is equipped with a newly developed 6K full frame back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor. This sensor design enhances light gathering efficiency, reduces noise and improves autofocusing capabilities.
It does not use the Dual Gain Output (DGO) system found in previous Cinema EOS models, instead relying on its advanced back-illuminated design for improved performance.
The EOS C400 features triple native ISOs, a rare feature that allows for optimal performance in varying lighting conditions.
The base ISOs adjust depending on the shooting mode, ranging from 160 to 12800, making the camera versatile for different filming environments.
Canon claims the camera offers 16 stops of dynamic range providing greater detail in both shadows and highlights.
The camera is powered by the DIGIC DV 7 image processor, which is also found in the C500 Mark II and C300 Mark III, ensuring high-quality image processing and color reproduction.
The EOS C400 supports a variety of recording formats including Cinema RAW Lite, XF-AVC, and XF-HEVC. These formats provide options for both high-quality and efficient video recording.
The camera can also record proxy files simultaneously to an SD card while capturing high-resolution footage to CFexpress cards.
The camera uses the RF lens mount allowing compatibility with Canon’s RF lens lineup and adaptable to other lens types via an adapter.
It is designed to be smaller and lighter than the C500 Mark II, weighing 1.55 kg (3.41 lbs). This makes it ideal for use in tight spaces and on gimbals.
The camera features Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with enhanced autofocus performance and coverage. It also includes 5-axis sensor stabilization.
The EOS C400 is equipped with a range of input and output options including 12G-SDI, 3G-SDI and Mini XLR, supporting professional audio and video connectivity.
The C400 features a higher resolution 26.7 MP sensor with 16 stops of dynamic range compared to the C500 Mark II’s 20.8 MP sensor and 15 stops of dynamic range.
The C400 is lighter and more compact making it more suitable for dynamic shooting environments. The C400 introduces newer recording formats and higher frame rate options providing more flexibility for filmmakers.
