The Phantom Ultimate 2 is the world’s thinnest tri-fold smartphone with 11mm thickness when folded. This design is even slimmer than some of the leading bi-fold models in the market such as the Galaxy Z Fold 6, which measures 12.1mm in thickness.

Factor in achieving this slim profile is the use of advanced materials. The phone features a battery cover that is just 0.25mm thick crafted from a super-compressed Titan Advanced Fiber material.

The phone utilizes a dual-hinge mechanism that allows for folding and unfolding. The hinges have been tested to withstand up to 300,000 folds.

When folded, the Phantom Ultimate 2 features a 6.48-inch cover display. However it unfolds into a massive 10-inch 3K OLED panel with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The device is equipped with Touch and Display Driver Integration (TDDI) technology. This innovation merges the touch sensor and display driver into a single chip. With a resolution of 1,620 x 2,880 pixels and a pixel density of 392 PPI.

The Phantom Ultimate 2 is designed to be versatile with multiple folding modes to suit different use cases. It can be configured in a laptop-like mode with the bottom half of the screen used as a keyboard or in a tent mode, ideal for dual-screen tasks such as real-time translation.

This adaptability makes the device suitable for a wide range of scenarios from work to entertainment. The large screen supports multi-window mode allowing users to run three or more apps simultaneously. This feature is useful for multitasking.

Tecno has optimized the software of the Phantom Ultimate 2 to take full advantage of its tri-fold design. Users can switch between three vertical windows each dedicated to different tasks.

The user interface is also designed to adapt to different folding scenarios. Dynamic wallpapers, adaptive icons and layouts adjust automatically based on how the device is folded.

Phantom Ultimate 2 is equipped with a triple-camera unit on the back designed to deliver high-quality photography in various lighting conditions.

The hinges of the Phantom Ultimate 2 are made from a material with a tensile strength of 2100MPa. This design is crucial for a foldable device, where durability is often a concern.

The dual-hinge mechanism facilitates smooth folding and also minimizes the crease in the middle of the display. This results in a more visually appealing screen enhances the overall user experience.

The company previously showed the Phantom Ultimate, a rollable concept phone, at the IFA 2024 tech exhibition. This earlier model featured a display that could expand from 6.55 inches to 7.11 inches in just 1.3 seconds.

Tecno claims that the Phantom Ultimate 2’s hinges have been tested for 300,000 folds. While this is 200,000 fewer folds than leading book-style phones like the Honor Magic V3.

Tecno’s promotional video for the Phantom Ultimate 2 highlights innovative use cases made possible by the trifold design.

One scenario shows a user multitasking with three vertically oriented windows each taking up one of the screens. This setup could enhance productivity for users who need to manage multiple apps simultaneously.

Another use case shows the device’s ability to mimic a laptop with the base screen flat for typing and the remaining two displays stacked like a laptop screen.

The Phantom Ultimate 2 can also be folded into a tent mode, allowing face-to-face interactions in different languages with AI processing real-time language translation.

Tecno launched its first flip phone, the Phantom V Flip 5G and its book-style phone, the Phantom V Fold, globally last year. With next-generation models expected to launch in September.

According to the International Data Corporation, worldwide foldable phone shipments are expected to reach 25 million devices by the end of 2024, a 37.6% increase from the 18.1 million units shipped in 2023.

By 2028, the total number of foldable phone shipments worldwide is projected to rise to 45.7 million units, a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.3% for the period 2023-2028.
