Northern Mexico: 6 Killed, 26 Injured after Gunmen Attack in Party

In Northern Mexico three gunmen started firing at a party, leaving six people dead and 26 others injured. The attack occurred in the city of Ciudad Obregon, located in the border state of Sonora.

Among the victims, two were under 18 years old, and, five of the wounded were children. This attack has claimed lives but has also left a lasting impact on the lives of the survivors, with four individuals in critical condition and 13 others treated and released from local hospitals.

According to authorities, the motive behind the attack was a direct assault on a suspected cartel member present at the party.

The suspects was reportedly wanted on charges including homicide and criminal activities that plague the region. The assailants, numbering four in total, managed to escape the scene.

The suspected cartel member attempted to flee but was killed. The region has become a place for violent clashes as these criminal organizations vie for control, leading to a concerning escalation in violence that has consequences for the local population.

On December 17, a Christmas party in the town of Salvatierra witnessed an attack that claimed the lives of 16 people. The state of Guanajuato, in particular, has been a hotspot for such incidents.

On December 9, where a violent clash erupted between gunmen from a criminal gang and residents of a small farming community, is indicative of the growing frustration among the populace.

Villagers, armed with sickles and hunting rifles, chased down suspected gang members. The country has been a battleground for drug cartels, with turf wars claiming tens of thousands of lives since 2006.
