Neuralink livestreamed an update featuring its first brain implant patient, Noland Arbaugh, a quadriplegic man who, with the help of Neuralink’s implant was able to control a computer using his thoughts.

This achievement opens doors for individuals with severe physical limitations to engage in activities previously impossible.

Arbaugh, 29, shared his experience, expressing gratitude for the life-changing technology. He described the surgery as “super easy” and said his ability to play video games like Civilization VI and online chess, activities he had given up on before the implant.

Brain implant contains numerous electrodes, allowing for precise control and interaction with computers. Unlike previous brain devices, Neuralink’s implant operates wirelessly, enhancing its applications.

The FDA granted permission to conduct human trials in 2023, showing a milestone in the company’s journey. Musk hinted at future capabilities, including the restoration of vision.

While Neuralink is not the sole player in the field of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), its implant’s advanced features, such as wireless connectivity and high electrode count, distinguish it from competitors.

Other institutions and companies, like the BrainGate consortium and École Polytechnique Fédérale in Lausanne, Switzerland, are also making strides in BCI technology.

The first patient, Noland Arbaugh, a quadriplegic who sustained a spinal cord injury in a diving accident eight years ago, showcased the capabilities of Neuralink’s brain implant.
