Honduras officially opened its embassy in Beijing, China on June 11, 2023. The inauguration ceremony was attended by China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang and his Honduran counterpart Enrique Reina. The embassy’s permanent location is yet to be determined, and Honduras plans to increase the number of staff.
China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang pledged a new model of “friendly cooperation” between China and Honduras based on the countries’ different sizes and systems. This move came after Honduras broke off relations with Taiwan in March and established formal diplomatic ties with China. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province and prohibits its diplomatic partners from having formal ties with Taipei.
The opening of the embassy coincided with Honduran President Xiomara Castro’s state visit to China. During her visit, Castro also visited the headquarters of the New Development Bank, a bank established by the BRICS nations, and expressed Honduras’ interest in joining the bank.
