The shooting took place on June 21, 2024, at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, Arkansas. Three people were killed, and ten others were wounded including two police officers.

The suspect is identified as 44-year-old Travis Eugene Posey from New Edinburg, Arkansas, was apprehended after being injured in a shootout with police.

Around 11:30 a.m. local time, police received emergency calls reporting an active shooter at the Mad Butcher grocery store.

Law enforcement arrived engaged in a gunfight with Posey, who was armed with a shotgun. The situation was contained and the suspect was taken into custody after sustaining non-life-threatening injuries.

Three individuals lost their lives during the shooting. Ten people including two police officers were wounded.

The injuries ranged from non-life-threatening to critical. The injured officers were treated for their wounds, which were not life-threatening.

Travis Eugene Posey, a resident of New Edinburg, Arkansas was identified as the shooter. Posey had no prior criminal record that could have hinted at such violent behavior.

Posey is expected to face three counts of capital murder, with additional charges pending further investigation.

David Rodriguez, who was at a nearby gas station, initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks before realizing the situation.

The small city of Fordyce, which has a population of approximately 3,396. Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders expressed her condolences and commended law enforcement for their response.

Arkansas State Police along with local law enforcement responded and managed to contain the situation without escalation.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) provided additional support in the investigation.

The shooting began around 11:30 a.m. inside the Mad Butcher grocery store. Shoppers and staff were caught off guard leading to panic. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots initially mistaking them for fireworks.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene. The injured included 10 civilians and two police officers with conditions ranging from minor to critical. Victims were transported to local hospitals with some requiring urgent medical attention.

Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders expressed gratitude to law enforcement and first responders for their quick actions. President Biden was briefed on the incident and federal authorities were involved in the investigation.

This incident is one of many mass shootings that have plagued the United States in 2024 with the Gun Violence Archive reporting over 230 such incidents so far this year.

The summer months have seen an increase in violent incidents with 21 mass shootings recorded in just the past week.
