Vladimir Putin’s landslide victory comes with criticism from both domestic and international quarters regarding the legitimacy of the electoral process with many decrying the lack of democratic principles in the election.
The election has been marred by allegations of political repression, censorship, and the imprisonment of Putin’s political opponents casting doubt on the fairness and transparency of the electoral process.
With no credible challengers allowed to stand against Putin, the election was largely seen as a foregone conclusion. Thousands of Vladimir Putin’s opponents staged symbolic protests, including the “Noon against Putin” initiative.
Western nations, including the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom, have condemned the election as neither free nor fair citing concerns over political repression and censorship.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced the election as fraudulent, addressing its lack of legitimacy, particularly in light of Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
In his victory speech Putin reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Russia’s military and asserted that no amount of intimidation or suppression could undermine the will of the Russian people.
Vladimir Putin cautioned against the escalation of tensions with NATO, warning of the risks of World War III if a conflict were to erupt between Russia and the Western military alliance.
