Renfield
Renfield, the loyal servant to Count Dracula, is getting a modern reboot in a new movie set to hit theaters next spring. The character of Renfield dates back to Bram Stoker’s original Dracula novel from 1897, where he served as Dracula’s assistant in his plan to turn others into vampires.
Renfield has since appeared on screen in over 20 different adaptations, from the 1922 film Nosferatu to the more recent Penny Dreadful series.
In the new movie, Renfield, played by Nicholas Hoult, is a tortured aide to Dracula, played by Nicolas Cage, who is forced to do his bidding and procure his prey, no matter how debased.
However, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of the Prince of Darkness.
The film will explore how Renfield’s agreement with Dracula to gain immortality by helping him has devolved into a toxic, co-dependent relationship over the centuries.
This comedic take on the classic horror villain is inspired by Taika Waititi’s vampire mockumentary, What We Do in the Shadows.
