North Korea has fired cruise missiles off its east coast, according to South Korea’s military. This is the latest in a series of moves by the nuclear-armed state. The missile launches comes when weapons testing from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The missile launch occurred near the port of Sinpo, as reported by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). The exact number and type of missiles fired are not clear. The military detected the launches at 8:00 am local time.
This follows North Korea’s claim of a successful test of a new generation of cruise missiles, named Pulhwasal-3-31, just a few days earlier.
Unlike ballistic missiles, the testing of cruise missiles is not prohibited under current UN sanctions against Pyongyang. Cruise missiles, being jet-propelled and flying at lower altitudes.
The United States, South Korea, and Japan, has expressed concern and condemnation over North Korea’s continuous weapons testing.
Officials in Washington and Seoul, however, have not detected signs of North Korea intending military action.
Kim Jong Un has accelerated weapons development and issued threats of nuclear conflict with the United States and its Asian allies.
The North Korean leader’s government appears to be confrontation with the U.S. and its allies, abandoning its decades-long goal of peacefully reuniting with South Korea.

The U.S., South Korea, and Japan have been expanding their combined military exercises. These exercises are by Kim as invasion rehearsals. The involved nations are also sharpening their strategies, leveraging nuclear-capable U.S. assets.
While not prohibited by UN sanctions, these missiles contribute to an increasingly volatile situation on the Korean Peninsula.
Kim Jong Un’s declaration that South Korea is the principal enemy shows a shift in priorities. The abandonment of the goal of peacefully reuniting with South Korea concerns about the potential for more aggressive actions in the future.
North Korea, with the alleged support of Russia, has made strides in advancing its ballistic missile program.
