The new electric race car prototype was revealed in downtown Chicago with the NASCAR Chicago Street Race weekend. On July 6, 2024, NASCAR introduced an all-electric SUV prototype, a departure from its typical gasoline-powered cars.

The electric SUV retains the bold, colorful aesthetics NASCAR is known for complete with large wheels and a rear wing for stability at high speeds.

It features three electric motors, one for the front wheels and two for the rear, producing a total of 1,300 horsepower nearly double that of current gas-powered NASCAR vehicles.

The prototype is equipped with a 78 kWh liquid-cooled battery and utilizes regenerative braking to convert kinetic energy into power.

With a peak power output of 1,000kW, the vehicle showcases the potential for electric motors to outperform traditional combustion engines in terms of raw power.

The prototype was developed in collaboration with ABB, a leader in electrification infrastructure which also plays an important role in the Formula E racing series.

NASCAR plans to reduce its carbon footprint to zero across its core operations by 2035. This includes initiatives beyond racing such as reducing emissions from office spaces, transportation and operations at NASCAR-owned tracks.

NASCAR vehicles run on a fuel blend of 85% gasoline and 15% ethanol. The organization plans to introduce more sustainable racing fuels in the coming years, which can still be used in traditional V8 engines.

Racing itself is a minor contributor to NASCAR’s overall carbon emissions. The organization is focusing on operational changes to meet its sustainability goals.

NASCAR acknowledges that some fans may resist the shift to electric vehicles given the sport’s deep-rooted association with loud, fuel-burning engines.

The prototype’s development plans to gauge fan interest and attract a new audience interested in electric vehicle technology.

NASCAR’s move towards electrification could influence public perception and increase interest in electric vehicles.

The SUV designis with current market trends where traditional cars constitute less than 20% of US auto sales and SUVs dominate the market.

The electric SUV prototype measures 185.5 inches in length, 78.6 inches in width and 56 inches in height. It weighs approximately 4,000 pounds heavier than the current Next Gen car, which weighs around 3,500 pounds.

It features a powertrain composed of three STARD UHP 6-Phase motors providing an all-wheel-drive configuration.

The prototype includes advanced suspension systems and high-performance brakes derived from current Cup car technologies.

The vehicle has undergone testing at multiple tracks including the Coliseum, Martinsville and Charlotte with positive feedback on its performance. NASCAR driver David Ragan has been involved in testing.

The project is a collaborative effort between NASCAR and ABB, an electrification and automation company.

This partnership is important in NASCAR’s strategy to decarbonize and promote sustainability in motorsports.

ABB’s role is beyond just providing technology, they are integral in strategizing the electrification of various NASCAR operations from race cars to logistical equipment.

The electric prototype features a regenerative braking system. This system converts kinetic energy from braking into electrical power.

Despite being a crossover utility vehicle rather than a typical sports coupe, the prototype is engineered for high performance with great acceleration and braking capabilities. Its heavier weight means it navigates corners slightly slower than its gas-powered counterparts.

NASCAR plans to implement renewable energy solutions across its facilities including the installation of EV charging stations at the 15 tracks it owns.

These stations are provided by ABB and will be accessible to the public, promoting wider adoption of electric vehicles.
