The victim, a 16-year-old girl, reportedly faced a sexual attack in the online metaverse, leaving her distraught after her digital character, or avatar, was gang-raped by strangers online.

Experts, including the chairman of the UK Association of Police and Crime Commissioners, Donna Jones, address the urgency of updating legislation to keep pace with the risks emerging from artificial intelligence and virtual platforms.
The need for legislative reforms is said by concerns that current laws have not evolved to address the specific harms associated with virtual offenses.
While the digital nature of the assault spared the victim from physical harm, the psychological impact cannot be understated. The victim, under 16 at the time, experienced trauma comparable to real-world sexual assault.
