Intuitive Machines Launches First Private US Moon Lander

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is on a journey from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, carrying the Nova-C lander developed by Houston-based Intuitive Machines Inc. This mission, designated IM-1, seeks to achieve what no private company has done before, successfully land a spacecraft on the moon.

The Nova-C spacecraft, dubbed Odysseus, is to touch down on the lunar surface’s south pole on February 22, 2024.

This event is the end of a 50-year hiatus for America in lunar exploration. The last time a US spacecraft landed on the moon was during the Apollo program in 1972, with the mission of Apollo 17.

Intuitive Machines, driven by its vision of pioneering lunar exploration, has crafted Odysseus to navigate the complexities of space travel and lunar descent.

The spacecraft, standing at 4.3 meters tall with six sturdy legs, is equipped with cutting-edge technology to ensure a safe and precise landing within 300 kilometers of the moon’s south pole.

NASA’s partnership with Intuitive Machines underlines the importance of this mission. Six payloads developed by NASA will be onboard Odysseus, alongside five commercial payloads.
