Asia’s largest tulip garden in Kashmir is in full bloom and ready to welcome tourists from March 19. The garden, also known as Siraj Bagh, is located between Dal Lake and Zabarwan Hills and has become a well-known landmark across the country.
Besides 1.5 million tulips of various colours and hues, the garden will have other spring flowers like hyacinths, daffodils, muscari, and cyclamens on display.
Preparations like gardening, engineering, fungicide treatment, nutrient spraying, and minor repairs are underway. The garden has expanded this year and new varieties of tulips have been added.
The gardeners are working round the year to ensure that the quality of bulbs is maintained year after year. It is expected to receive a heavy footfall of visitors this season.
The Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden, also known as Siraj Bagh, is located in Srinagar, the capital city of Jammu and Kashmir.
This garden is the largest tulip garden in Asia and is situated between Dal Lake and Zabarwan Hills. The garden was opened in 2008 by the then-chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad.
The garden was made to attract more tourists to the Valley during the spring season. The garden is currently in full bloom and is ready to welcome tourists from March 19th, 2023.
The ground staff is busy with preparations for the tulip show. They are engaged in gardening, engineering, fungicide treatment, nutrient spraying, and minor repairs. These preparations ensure that the garden is in pristine condition for the visitors.
The garden is home to over 1.5 million tulips of various colors and hues, such as yellow, red, crimson, purple, and white.
Apart from tulips, the garden also has other spring flowers like hyacinths, daffodils, muscari, and cyclamens on display. These flowers add to the beauty of the garden and attract more visitors.
The garden has become a well-known landmark across the country, and every year, the ground staff expands it and introduces new varieties of tulips.
This year, they have extended the fountain channel, which enhances the beauty of the garden even more. Mr. Inam-ul-Rehman, the in-charge of the garden, says that the garden should set an example of gardening professionalism across the globe.
The supervisor of the garden, Mr. Mushtaq Ahmad Mir, says that preparations for the tulip show are at their peak as it is expected to open next Sunday.
He also expects a heavy footfall of visitors at the garden this season. Last year, the garden had two lakh visitors, and he hopes that it will be better this time.
The garden was originally known as Siraj Bagh and was opened in 2008 to promote tourism in the Valley during the spring season.
The garden was renamed as Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in honor of the late Prime Minister of India.
While the tulip bloom lasts only for three to five weeks, the ground staff works throughout the year to ensure that the quality of bulbs is maintained year after year.
The ground staff is busy round the year in preparing the garden for the bloom period in March-April. After the bloom period, they examine the tulips to check for diseases.
In May and June, they start harvesting, which takes three months. In October, they dig up the soil and add fertilizers, and in November, they sow tulip bulbs. The gardener stays busy with this work throughout the year.
