Apple has reached a labor agreement with the International Association of Machinists (IAM) at its Towson, Maryland retail store. This is the first successful unionization and collective bargaining agreement for Apple retail workers in the United States.

In June 2022, employees at the Towson Apple Store voted to join the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) specifically the Coalition of Organized Retail Employees (CORE).

The decision to unionize was driven by a desire for better working conditions, fair pay and more job protections.

The unionization effort at the Towson store was seen as a step forward, as it was the first Apple Store in the US to successfully unionize.

After the unionization vote in June 2022, negotiations for a labor contract began in May 2023. The process faced delays with the union accusing Apple of stalling tactics.

In response employees voted in May 2024 to authorize a strike demonstrating their determination to secure a fair contract.

The US National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has twice ruled against Apple, finding that the company violated labor laws by denying unionized stores the same benefits as non-unionized ones and conducting illegal interrogations of union staff at its World Trade Center store in New York City.

The tentative agreement includes a 10% pay increase over the three-year term of the contract, which is a huge improvement for the employees.

This increase will help address the rising cost of living and ensure that workers are compensated fairly for their contributions.

The contract also promises an increase in starting pay for 80% of job positions at the store making it more attractive for prospective employees and ensuring that Apple remains competitive in the labor market.

One of the issues during the negotiations was the need for better work-life balance. The agreement includes scheduling improvements that provide protections for part-time and full-time workers.

These scheduling protections will allow employees to better plan their personal lives, reducing stress and improving overall job satisfaction.

The contract includes several provisions aimed at enhancing job security for employees. These include guarantees for severance packages for laid-off workers and limits on the use of contract employees.

Additionally, the agreement establishes a transparent disciplinary process with protections and accountability measures preventing unjust or arbitrary disciplinary actions.

The agreement ensures that employees maintain their current benefits, which was a major concern during the negotiations. This includes access to healthcare, retirement plans and other essential benefits.

The union secured the right to bargain over future additions to benefits allowing employees to have a say in any changes or enhancements to their compensation packages.

The unionization efforts at the Towson, Maryland Store began in earnest in June 2022, when the workers voted in favor of joining the IAM.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) played a pivotal role in organizing the workers and negotiating the terms of the agreement.

The union was known for its representation of workers in various industries and it has been instrumental in advocating for the rights of the Towson Store employees.

The IAM’s Coalition of Organized Retail Employees represents the employees at the Maryland store.

In May 2024, the workers at the Towson store authorized a strike due to negotiations with management that failed to meet their demands.

The tentative agreement, which awaits ratification by the store’s 85 employees includes several important provisions aimed at improving the working conditions and compensation for retail workers.

The successful unionization at the company is part of a trend of unionization efforts in the retail and tech industries. Examples include unionization at an Amazon warehouse in New York City, a Chipotle store in Michigan and hundreds of Starbucks locations across the country.

With approximately 270 stores across the United States, the Towson agreement is likely to inspire employees at other locations to consider unionization.

Only one other Apple Store, in Oklahoma City has voted to unionize, joining the Communications Workers of America. However, they have not yet secured a labor deal.

Apple has introduced a 0.15% fee for US banks on credit card transactions made through Apple Pay.

Apple Pay users can now redeem credit card rewards points for purchases enhancing the value of loyalty programs and increasing customer engagement.

Apple Pay now supports BNPL installment payments allowing users to convert purchases into installment plans at the point of sale. This feature positions Apple Pay as a competitor in the growing BNPL market.

Apple Pay has broadened its reach by supporting payments via third-party browsers using a scannable code. This increases Apple Pay’s accessibility and appeal to a wider audience in the e-commerce space.
