The peaceful Mendenhall Stream transformed into a raging torrent as water levels surged due to a glacial lake outburst. This phenomenon, known as a glacial lake outburst flood, occurs when trapped water within a glacier-dammed lake is abruptly released through cracks in the thinning ice, leading to a catastrophic rush of water downstream.

For this situation, the source of the flooding was the Suicide Basin, an ice- and water-filled basin nestled next to the Mendenhall Glacier.
