The third day of the first Test match against Pakistan in Multan when he played an elegant straight drive past Aamer Jamal securing the 71 runs he needed to overtake Cook’s tally of 12,472 Test runs.

Joe Root surpassed Alastair Cook’s tally of 12,472 Test runs when he reached 71 not out in the morning session of day three against Pakistan in Multan. The moment came with a classic straight drive, a shot synonymous with Root’s elegant batting style.
This places Joe Root fifth on the list of all-time Test run-scorers, trailing only behind Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid.
Joe Root made his Test debut in 2012 against India in Nagpur. Since then, his career has been by a steady accumulation of runs.
Joe Root scored 73 runs in his debut innings, batting in the No. 6 position. His first Test century came against New Zealand at Headingley in May 2013.
