What is Bossaball

Bossaball is an innovative sport that merges elements of volleyball, soccer, gymnastics and music. Developed in Spain by Belgian athlete Filip Eyckmans in 2004, Bossaball has gained international popularity in countries like the Netherlands, Brazil, and Singapore.

Game Structure

Bossaball is played on an inflatable court that features trampolines on either side of a net. Each team consists of four players (with a maximum of five) and the objective is to ground the ball on the opponent’s side of the court.

Players Can Use Various Techniques to Hit the Ball, Including:

  • Volley Touch: Using hands or forearms.
  • Soccer Touch: Using any part of the body except hands or arms.

Teams are Allowed a Maximum of Five Touches to Return the Ball Over the Net and Scoring can Occur in Several Ways:

  • 1 point: Ball lands inbounds on opponent’s court.
  • 3 points: Ball lands directly on the opponent’s trampoline.
  • 5 points: A soccer touch that lands directly on the opponent’s trampoline.

Equipment Required

  • An inflatable court
  • Trampolines
  • A volleyball-like ball
  • A net (approximately 3 meters high) that can be adjusted for different skill levels.
What is Bossaball

One of the aspects of the sport is the role of the Samba Referee, who not only oversees the game but also acts as a DJ. The integration of music is essential to the game.

The game begins with one team serving by throwing or kicking the ball into the air and attempting to hit it over the net. The opposing team must then return it using no more than five touches. Players rotate positions after each point scored.

Bossaball Rules and Regulations

Number of Players

  • Bossaball teams can consist of 3, 4 or 5 players depending on the type of tournament.
  • Each team must have a mix of male and female players, as it is a mixed-gender sport.

Gameplay

  • A team can touch the ball up to 8 times before a player can throw it into the other team’s court from the trampoline.
  • Each player can make one throw with their hands or two throws with two separate parts of the body, such as the hands and then the feet.
  • The player on the trampoline is called the goalkeeper and their role is to defend that zone so the other team does not score 3 points.

Scoring

  • 1 point is awarded for hitting the ball into the opponent’s court.
  • 3 points are awarded for hitting the ball directly into the opponent’s trampoline.
  • 3 points are awarded for a soccer touch (kick) that lands in bounds on the opponent’s side.
  • 5 points are awarded for a soccer touch that lands directly in the opponent’s trampoline.

Winning

  • The first team to score 25 points wins the match.
  • If the score reaches 24-24, a team must win by 2 clear points.
  • Matches are usually played as the best of 3 or 5 sets.

Other Rules

  • The height of the net can be adjusted for different levels of play.
  • Players must always keep at least one body part on their own side of the net.
  • A player cannot touch the ball twice in a row.
  • The ball cannot be guided for more than 1 second.
  • Players must rotate positions after each point.
