The peaceful Mendenhall Stream transformed into a raging torrent as water levels surged due to a glacial lake outburst. This phenomenon, known as a glacial lake outburst flood, occurs when trapped water within a glacier-dammed lake is abruptly released through cracks in the thinning ice, leading to a catastrophic rush of water downstream.
For this situation, the source of the flooding was the Suicide Basin, an ice- and water-filled basin nestled next to the Mendenhall Glacier.
The city was surprised as the floodwaters penetrated riverbanks and immersed areas. Videos caught the awful sight of transcending trees falling into the Mendenhall Stream, their foundations tore from the disintegrating banks.
Even more devastating was the sight of homes teetering on the precipice before succumbing to the relentless force of the floodwaters, eventually collapsing into the river. Occupants confronted the impossible as their properties were gulped by the flooding waters, resulting in a path of destruction in their wake.

As the floodwaters kept on rising, the situation escalated to a place of emergency. No less than two homes were totally destroyed by the flood, while others experienced serious harm, and occupants had to escape their properties.
The city’s officials swiftly issued evacuation orders for residents residing along the vulnerable riverbank, prioritizing their safety as the floodwaters showed no signs of abating.
