Airbnb allowed hosts to install indoor security cameras in common areas such as hallways and living rooms, provided they were disclosed in listings and clearly visible.

Reports of hidden cameras and concerns over privacy violations have made the platform to implement a complete ban on indoor cameras. This ban extends to all areas of the property irrespective of prior disclosure.

The company has introduced stricter regulations regarding outdoor security cameras. Hosts must now disclose the presence and location of any outdoor cameras before guests book a listing.

Outdoor cameras are prohibited from monitoring indoor spaces or certain outdoor areas where guests have a reasonable expectation of privacy such as enclosed showers or saunas.

Hosts currently using indoor security cameras have until April 30th to remove them from their listings. Failure to comply with the new policy may result in Airbnb conducting investigations and removing listings or accounts.

The company will continue to permit the use of doorbell cameras and noise decibel monitors for security purposes. However, hosts must disclose the presence and location of these devices to guests.

While the ban on indoor security cameras is expected to affect only a small subset of listings, it represents a step towards safeguarding guest privacy on the platform. Most listings on Airbnb do not report having security cameras installed.
