Malaga Flood News: Thousands Evacuated After Flood Warning

According to Malaga flood news, the Spanish meteorological agency, AEMET issued alerts for extreme rainfall across southern and eastern Spain placing provinces like Malaga and Tarragona on red alert.

Evacuations are underway in riverside areas near Malaga, where heavy rainfall threatens the Guadalhorce river with overflow. Approximately 4,000 people were ordered to leave their homes on Wednesday evening.

Spain’s national weather service, AEMET has placed Malaga and Catalonia on the red alert level. This warning shows that these areas could experience danger due to rain and storms.

In addition to Malaga, high alerts are also issued for the provinces of Tarragona, Granada and Castellon.

According to Malaga flood news, Up to 180 mm of rain is expected to fall in Catalonia within a 12-hour period. Malaga and surrounding areas are forecasted to experience record-breaking rainfall.

These storms are from the DANA weather system and are projected to last until Friday, with flooding expected to increase due to continuous rainfall.

DANA or Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos refers to a weather phenomenon where a low-pressure system detaches from the main jet stream.

When colder atmospheric air meets warmer Mediterranean winds, DANA storms form heavy rainfall.

According to Malaga flood news, Roughly 3,000 residents living near the Guadalhorce River have been evacuated due to rising water levels. Local authorities reported that evacuation decisions were targeted toward areas along riverbanks.

Malaga’s emergency services are evacuating thousands of residents from over 1,000 homes across various neighborhoods.

The rain led to school closures across Malaga Province with many institutions shutting down to ensure the safety of students and staff.
