Who is Florida football’s top 2022 draft prospect?

The 2021 NFL draft is still a day from getting underway, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to start thinking about next year’s draft. Florida saw a mass exodus of talent following the 2020 season, especially on offense, and it could see as many as nine or 10 players drafted (depending on how the late rounds play out).

Because of that, UF probably won’t have as many players looking to jump to the professional level next offseason, but one player in particular is already attracting attention. In an ESPN article highlighting the top 2022 draft prospects for each team in the site’s “way-too-early top 25”, college football reporter Andrea Adelson chose cornerback Kaiir Elam as the Gators’ top player.

The Gators have had a history of churning out top defensive backs to the NFL, vying for the DBU naming rights with a few other programs. Kaiir Elam could be the next to continue the legacy. He has the size (6-foot-2, 193 pounds) and the family background (his uncle Matt was a first-round pick at safety in 2013), and is in line to take the next step in his junior season. Elam started 12 games last year opposite Marco Wilson (set to be drafted in a few weeks), and had 39 tackles, 2 interceptions, 11 pass breakups and a fumble recovery in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl against Oklahoma.

Elam has seen quite a bit of action in his time at Florida, stepping in to start five games in 2019 as a true freshman in place of the injured CJ Henderson and ultimately becoming a full-time starter in 2020. UF’s secondary as a whole struggled, but he was the strongest part of it.

He’ll enter 2021 as the leader of a young defensive back unit surrounded by first-round draft hype. Elam will hope to be the next member of “DBU” to be selected in the first 32 picks.
