WHO Gives Emergency Use Approval For AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 Vaccine

AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 Vaccine ‘Covax’, which is being produced by Serum Institute of India (SII) and SKBio, has been given the emergency use approval (EUA) by the World Health Organization (WHO).

In a statement released on Monday, WHO informed that the two versions which have been given the seal of approval can now be distributed in countries that lack the infrastructure to produce coronavirus vaccine.

“The WHO listed two versions of the AstraZeneca-Oxford Covid-19 vaccine for emergency use, giving the green light for these vaccines to be rolled out globally through Covax,” WHO statement said.

“Countries with no access to vaccines to date will finally be able to start vaccinating their health workers and populations at risk, contributing to the Covax facility’s goal of equitable vaccine distribution,” said Dr Mariangela Simao, the WHO assistant-director general for access to medicines.

“But we must keep up the pressure to meet the needs of priority populations everywhere and facilitate global access,” he added.
