The United States and the majority of EU member states have declared their refusal to send envoys to Vladimir Putin’s inauguration, citing the lack of democratic legitimacy in Russia’s March election.

Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department affirmed that the election was neither free nor fair.

Vladimir Putin secured 87.28 percent of the vote in the controversial March election which was marred by allegations of voter suppression and the sudden death of opposition figure Alexey Navalny. Western nations have criticized the reelection.
