The World Economic Forum (WEF) has released its annual Travel and Tourism Development Index for 2024. The United States has secured the top spot on this list.

Top 10 Countries for Travel and Tourism are:

  5. Australia

  7. United Kingdom
  8. China
  9. Italy
  10. Switzerland

Six countries (France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and Spain) share the number one ranking in the Henley Index for passport strength and five of these are in the WEF top 10.

Major Asian markets like Japan and China have seen huge growth post-pandemic. Japan’s tourism boom and China’s policy changes to attract more tourists.

The WEF report shows the issue of overtourism in countries like Spain and Italy. Measures such as tourist taxes and restrictions on new hotel openings are being implemented to manage the flow of visitors and protect local communities.

The global tourism sector is expected to return to pre-pandemic levels driven by lifted travel restrictions and strong pent-up demand.

While some regions like the Middle East have surpassed pre-pandemic levels of international tourist arrivals, others such as Europe, Africa, and the Americas show strong recovery trends.

Out of the top 30 countries, 26 are high-income economies with Europe and Asia-Pacific dominating the rankings.

Developing countries have shown improvements with 52 out of 71 economies increasing their scores since 2019. Countries like Indonesia, Brazil, and Türkiye are emerging as major travel destinations.

The sector faces challenges such as geopolitical uncertainties, economic fluctuations, inflation, and environmental risks.

Balancing tourism growth with sustainability remains critical. The sector offers high-wage jobs especially in developing countries, but issues like gender parity need to be addressed in regions like MENA and South Asia.

Leveraging natural and cultural assets could help developing economies boost their tourism sectors. Utilizing tourism for nature conservation efforts can help balance growth with sustainability.

Strategically managing visitor behavior and infrastructure development can tackle the impacts of overtourism.

Encouraging cultural exchange between tourists and local communities can enhance the tourism experience.

Global international tourist arrivals are anticipated to reach pre-pandemic levels by 2024. This resurgence is largely driven by the pent-up demand from travelers eager to explore after years of restrictions.

Top Three Best-Placed Countries for Travel and Tourism

United States is retaining its prime position, the US tops the TTDI. The country’s robust infrastructure, cultural attractions, and business-friendly environment contribute to its leading status.

Spain is for its rich cultural heritage and tourism-friendly policies, Spain secures the second spot.

Japan is with its advanced technology and unique cultural experiences, Japan ranks third showcasing its preparedness for future tourism trends.

Europe leads the TTDI with many of its countries scoring high. The region’s conditions including open travel policies and excellent infrastructure.

Out of the 119 economies ranked, 71 saw improvements in their scores from 2019 to 2023. The average improvement is a mere 0.7% above pre-pandemic levels.

Increased air travel options have facilitated the rebound. Easier travel regulations and policies have boosted tourism. Countries investing in their natural and cultural assets have seen better recovery rates.

Business travel and other non-leisure segments are yet to bounce back fully. The sector faces labor shortages impacting service quality and operational efficiency.

Inflationary pressures and reduced price competitiveness have led to service disruptions and higher costs. Of the top 30 TTDI scorers, 26 are high-income countries with 19 in Europe and seven in Asia-Pacific.

Favorable conditions for businesses encourage tourism investments. Liberal travel regulations attract more tourists.

Integration of digital technologies enhances the travel experience. Well-developed transport and tourism infrastructure support high tourist inflows.

The top 30 countries accounted for over three-quarters of the travel and tourism industry’s GDP in 2022 and 70% of GDP growth between 2020 and 2022.

Low- to upper-middle-income countries including those in sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa, Eurasia, South America, South Asia, and the Balkans and Eastern Europe have shown progress.

Despite improvements these countries still make up the majority of below-average scorers in the index. Increased investment is needed to boost their market share.

Although there has been progress in energy sustainability, some advancements like the reduction in emissions during the pandemic, may be temporary.
