Sandy Valley’s Cam Blair and Jackson’s Leena Patibandla were named male and female athletes of the year during Wednesday night’s Stark County High School Sports Awards show.
Blair rewrote the county’s passing records in football, earned All-Ohio honors in wrestling and played baseball at Sandy Valley.
In football, Blair finished his career ranked No. 1 in the county with 9,181 passing yards and 116 touchdown passes. He helped the Cardinals reach the third round of the playoffs for the first time in school history last fall when he accounted for 41 touchdowns. He will continue his athletic career on a football scholarship at Ashland University.
Blair finished third in Division III at 195 pounds at this year’s state wrestling tournament. The two-time state qualifier also helped Sandy Valley reach the quarterfinals of the state duals tournament.
In baseball, Blair ranked among the county offensive leaders in average, walks and runs and pitching leaders in ERA and strikeouts.
Patibandla is also a three-sport athlete at Jackson. As a sophomore, she helped lead the Polar Bears volleyball team to a Division I district championship and regional finals berth. In basketball, she ranked fourth in the county in assists while also ranking among the county’s top rebounders.
During the spring, Patibandla’s success continued in track and field. She won Federal League titles in the high jump and discus throw, while placing fourth in the long jump. She qualified for the Division I state meet in the high jump and discus, earning All-Ohio honors in both. She was regional runner-up in the high jump and discus after winning district titles in both events.
