At 76, Zambada has been a figure in the drug trafficking scene. He is known for his low-profile yet influential role, Zambada co-founded the Sinaloa Cartel with Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán.

The son of the infamous Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán, Guzmán López is a rising leader within the cartel. His decision to cooperate with US authorities in orchestrating the arrest of Zambada is an internal betrayal within the cartel.

The arrest of Zambada and Guzmán López was made possible through the assistance of Guzmán López himself.

In a cunning plan, Guzmán López lured Zambada onto a plane under the pretense of inspecting investment properties.

However, the plane was bound for the United States, where federal agents awaited their arrival in El Paso, Texas.

According to officials, the operation went off smoothly, a testament to the careful planning and coordination between US federal agencies.

Agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the FBI played pivotal roles in executing the arrests.

Zambada faces multiple federal criminal charges including those related to continuing criminal enterprise and money laundering.

At his initial court appearance, Zambada entered a not-guilty plea and is being held without bond. A hearing is set for July 31 to discuss bond issues further.

Following his arrest Guzmán López was transported to Chicago, where he faces charges in relation to his leadership in the cartel’s criminal activities particularly focusing on fentanyl trafficking.

This arrest is a continuation of charges previously filed against him.

The arrests are expected to exacerbate existing tensions within the Sinaloa Cartel. Experts have noted a power struggle between Zambada and the sons of El Chapo known as “Los Chapitos.”

With Zambada now in custody, violence and infighting within the cartel are likely to intensify as factions vie for control.

The Sinaloa Cartel has been one of the most powerful criminal organizations globally with an influence in drug trafficking.

They are responsible for a large portion of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and fentanyl entering the United States.

The Sinaloa Cartel was founded by Ismael Zambada Garcia also known as El Mayo and Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.

After the collapse of the Guadalajara Cartel in 1989, El Mayo and El Chapo took control and transformed the Sinaloa Cartel into one of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world.

The cartel is heavily involved in the manufacturing and trafficking of drugs including fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana and heroin.

Over the years, they have established a global network responsible for distributing massive quantities of these drugs generating billions of dollars in profits.

The Sinaloa Cartel has maintained a stronghold over various territories in Mexico and has expanded its influence into the United States and beyond.

The cartel is often considered the largest and most powerful drug trafficking organization in the Western Hemisphere.

The U.S. Department of Justice, FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) played key roles in planning and executing the arrest.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the arrest, addressing the importance of dismantling the leadership of the Sinaloa Cartel to address the fentanyl crisis.

FBI Director Christopher Wray highlighted the importance of capturing two individuals who had evaded law enforcement for decades.

Both individuals face charges related to the production and distribution of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid responsible for a huge number of overdose deaths in the United States.

El Mayo Zambada has been charged with running a continuing criminal enterprise, murder conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy and other drug-related offenses.

The arrests are seen as a step in addressing the fentanyl epidemic, which has been described as the deadliest drug crisis in US history.

With fentanyl overdoses being the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 45.

After El Chapo’s extradition to the United States and subsequent life sentence in a maximum-security prison, his sons, known as Los Chapitos. Joaquin Guzman Lopez is one of these sons, continuing the family’s involvement in drug trafficking.

The arrest of key figures like El Mayo and Guzman Lopez could lead to internal conflicts and power struggles within the cartel. With leadership vacuums, rival factions may vie for control leading to possible violence and instability.

In October 2019 following the arrest of another of El Chapo’s sons, Ovidio Guzman Lopez, a violent uprising known as the Culiacanazo occurred.

Hundreds of cartel gunmen descended on the city of Culiacan, resulting in intense clashes with authorities.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador acknowledged the progress in combating drug trafficking but called for transparency from the US regarding the operation.

Mexican officials were informed post-arrest and did not participate in the operation.

The Sinaloa Cartel is a major contributor to the fentanyl crisis in the United States. According to the DEA’s 2024 National Drug Threat Assessment, synthetic drugs like fentanyl are responsible for nearly all fatal drug poisonings in the country.
