Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra Review and More

Samsung has once again launched an all-powerful flagship device with the release of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Boasting an impressive list of specifications, this phone is a true powerhouse in terms of hardware and software. From a large 6.8-inch WQHD+ Super AMOLED panel to a customised Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra seems to have it all.

Samsung Galaxy S23 ultra

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra boasts impressive specifications, including a 6.8-inch WQHD+ Super AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, the ‘Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy’, and up to 12GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

The phone has a 5,000mAh battery with fast wired and wireless charging, but does not come with a charger in the box. The camera app has Expert RAW, and the Gallery app allows users to lift objects and save them as PNG files.

The S Pen works as expected, but palm rejection when using it is a bit of a problem. Bloatware and third-party apps are still a problem, with many Samsung-branded apps present, although most can be uninstalled.

The display is said to have improved colors and brightness, and the phone performed well in benchmarks. The customized SoC should deliver better AI processing speeds, and low-light videos and photos.

Design and Display

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra has a large 6.8-inch WQHD+ Super AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling rate.

The phone has a resolution of 1440 x 3200 pixels and a pixel density of 516 PPI. The display is also HDR10+ certified, which means it can play HDR content with vibrant colours and contrast.

Samsung has gone with a flatter Super AMOLED panel this time around, which gives the device a sleek and modern look.

The phone’s display is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, which is a durable material that can withstand scratches and drops.

The Galaxy S23 Ultra also has a 20:9 aspect ratio and a punch-hole camera cutout in the top centre of the screen. The bezels are relatively thin, which means more screen real estate for users.

Performance

Inside, there’s something new in the form of the ‘Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy’, which is Samsung’s branding for a customised Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.

The phone is offered with a maximum of 12GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. The SIM card tray can hold two nano-SIM cards and supports dual 5G standby, but the phone does not support expandable storage.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra managed 11,79,528 points in AnTuTu along with 1,513 and 4,626 points in Geekbench 5’s single-core and multi-core tests, respectively. For context, the iQoo 11 5G and the OnePlus 11 5G managed scores of 12,63,366 and 10,16,772 in AnTuTu, respectively.

In terms of graphics, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra managed 64fps in GFXBench’s Car Chase test, compared to the 111fps and 56fps on the iQoo 11 5G and the OnePlus 11 5G respectively.

While comparing scores, one also needs to keep in the mind the higher display resolution offered by the Galaxy S23 Ultra and the OnePlus 11 5G.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra’s customized processor offers several benefits for its Galaxy S23 lineup, apart from better benchmark numbers.

Samsung claims that its customized SoC should be able to deliver better AI processing speeds, along with better low-light videos and photos.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra features a quad-camera setup at the back, which includes a 108-megapixel primary sensor, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, a 10-megapixel periscope lens with 10x optical zoom, and a 3D ToF sensor for depth sensing.

The camera also features optical image stabilization (OIS) for better stability while shooting. Samsung has made some improvements in the camera department with the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

The camera app now includes Expert RAW, which makes it useful for those who need it. The Gallery app, just like iOS 16, allows users to lift objects, people, and pets from photos and place them in other photos or backgrounds.

The 108-megapixel primary sensor can capture highly detailed images, and the periscope lens with 10x optical zoom allows for some impressive zoom shots.

The camera also offers 4K video recording at up to 60fps, and there’s even a 1080p slow-motion mode at 240fps.

One of the most impressive features of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra’s camera is the ability to shoot in low light conditions.

The phone uses a technique called nona-binning, which combines nine pixels into one to capture more light and detail.

This technology, along with the large 1/1.33-inch sensor size, makes it possible to capture some stunning low light shots.

Battery Life and Other Features

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra comes with a massive 5,000mAh battery, which should easily last a day with moderate to heavy usage. The phone also supports fast charging at up to 45W and wireless charging at up to 25W.

It also supports reverse wireless charging, which means you can use the phone to charge other devices wirelessly.

Other features include an in-display fingerprint sensor, IP68 water and dust resistance, stereo speakers, and Samsung’s One UI 5.5 based on Android 13.
