Pep Guardiola falls short of Champions League glory again after losing 1st cup final as Manchester City manager

Manchester City had no answers to Kai Havertz’s 42nd-minute goal which proved to be the decisive blow as Chelsea lifted the Champions League title for the second time in history after 2012.

Pep Guardiola has to wait longer to lay his hands on the UEFA Champions League Trophy as his Manchester City lost the UCL final 1-0 against Chelsea on Saturday night in Porto.

City had no answers to Kai Havertz’s 42nd-minute goal which proved to be the decisive blow as Chelsea lifted the Champions League title for the second time in history after 2012. Havertz is the first player to score his first Champions League goal in a final since Manchester City’s lkay Gündoan in 2013.

Chelsea’s most expensive player kept his composure as he latched on to Mason Mount’s through pass and evaded goalkeeper Ederson before rolling the ball into an empty net in the 42nd minute to decide a tight encounter.

Chelsea have now lifted the trophy in 6 of their 7 major European finals in their history – with this their fourth European success after the Champions League (2020-21 & 2011-12) and Europa League (2012-13 & 2018-19).

For Chelsea’s German manager Thomas Tuchel, the Champions League victory comes after his Paris St Germain side suffered defeat in last season’s final against Bayern Munich.

The defeat was Pep Guardiola’s first in a cup final as Manchester City manager. City have won the Premier League thrice, League Cup 4 times, clinched the Community Shield twice and grabbed the FA Cup once under Guardiola since 2016.

This is also Guardiola’s second major cup final loss as a manager after Barcelona’s defeat in the Copa del Rey summit clash in 2010-11. Despite winning three of the last four Premier League titles for City, Spaniard Guardiola failed to deliver the coveted European trophy he last won with Barcelona in 2011.
