Novak Djokovic won his first title on clay this season as he defeated Slovakian Alex Molcan in the final of the Belgrade Open ATP 250 event on Saturday in front of his home fans.
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has set his sights on French Open title after winning the Belgrade Open in front of his home fans on Saturday. Djokovic defeated Slovakian Alex Molcan 6-4, 6-3 after a wobbly start in the men’s singles final of the ATP 250 event.
Djokovic ended his long wait for a title on the tour as the Belgrade Open triumph was his first since winning the Australian Open in February. It was an erratic display as Djokovic lost his serve thrice in the first set before staging a dominant comeback.
He was given a standing ovation by the home fans after the win in the final. Djokovic ended a patch run on clay with the title at home. The Serb was beaten in the final of Rome Masters by Rafael Nadal earlier this month. He also suffered an exit in the last 16 at Monte Carlo Masters and semi-final exit at Serbia Open.
But Djokovic struck a happy figure as he lifted the trophy. Djokovic went down in straight sets against Rafael Nadal in the final of last year’s French Open. The Serb has won the Roland Garros only once in his career.
“I want to thank everyone who turned up and made this a memorable day, I have to admit that part of my mind is already in Paris,” Djokovic said.
