Modi government using sedition as a political weapon: Shiv Sena in Saamana

The Shiv Sena on Thursday launched a scathing attack on the Centre, accusing it of using investigative agencies like CBI and ED to suppress dissident voices and using sedition as a “political weapon”.

Raking up the IT raids on actor Taapsee Pannu and film-maker Anurag Kashyap as well as the quashing of a plea against former J&K chief minister Farooq Abdullah, Shiv Sena said “supporting the Modi government has become patriotism and protesting treason”.

In an editorial in its mouthpiece Saamana, the Sena said, “A new interpretation of ‘patriotism’ and ‘sedition’ has been established in the last four-five years in our country. Supporting the Modi government has become patriotism and protesting treason. This anti-India stamp has been imposed on many people till now.”

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said that expression of views different from the opinion of the government cannot be termed “seditious” while dismissing a petition filed against Farooq Abdullah over his remarks on scrapping of Article 370.

“The Supreme Court has pierced the ears of the government…Not only was this petition quashed by the Supreme Court, it was also made clear that expressing opposition to the government is not treason. Fifteen days ago, the Delhi High Court also said that the government cannot impose sedition clashes against them to silence the dissidents,” the editorial said.

“Farooq Abdullah’s remarks can be objected to. The government and their congregation of devotees can comment harshly on them. But why the insistence on proving them traitors? Efforts were also made to prove the farmers traitors and Khalistanis,” the Sena said.
