Mizoram government to go ahead with lockdown like restrictions for 7 more days

Mizoram health minister R. Lalthangliana said on Friday that a lockdown like restrictions in Aizawl and other district headquarters is likely to be extended for another seven days to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission.

Lalthangliana said this at a meeting of health officials, leaders of churches and NGOs convened by state governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai on Friday morning.

The state-level meeting involving some ministers, important officials, doctors and leaders of churches and civil society organisations is in progress at the time of filing this report.

Earlier on Thursday, ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) legislator and medical operational team on Covid-19 chairman  ZR Thiamsanga had alleged that Covid-19 guidelines are being flouted in many ways especially at weddings, funeral and in the streets.

He alleged that people came out to the streets in large number in violation of the guidelines, which even caused traffic snarl in the state capital and some others district headquarters.

Commencing from April 20, the state government has imposed a lockdown-like restrictions in all 11 district headquarters, including Aizawl to break the chain of rising Covid-19 transmission and to felicitate Covid-19 test and contact tracing.

The existing restriction is scheduled to be lifted on May 3 at 4 am.

According to officials, majority of Covid-19 cases detected during this year were locally transmitted cases.

Mizoram on Friday reported 140 new Covid-19 cases and two more fatalities.

The total Covid-19 count has amounted to 6,019 and the death toll to 15.

There are 1,122 active cases in the state while 4,882 people have recovered from the infection.
