Meghalaya: Shillong, Tura, Jowai declared containment areas; public movement not allowed

Lockdown-like restrictions will be imposed in Meghalaya’s state capital Shillong and two other towns – Jowai and Tura from May 1, which the state government called it “containment measures” to curb the spike of Covid19 cases.

“The decision has been taken after thorough discussion based on inputs from the deputy commissioners as well as inputs given by experts of the health department,” Tynsong said.

He said in these three places, the spike of Covid19 cases is vulnerable.

Under the containment measures, Tynsong said all public, social, political and religious gatherings, religious services are not allowed.

Wedding and funerals are, however, permitted subject to adhering to regulatory measures and protocols.

All sporting activities are not allowed during the containment period.

All educational institutes remain shut from May 1, but ongoing board exams will continue.

Inter-district movement is restricted, except for emergency cases.

All other non-essential movement is discouraged or stopped.

All private offices will remain shut, except those providing essential services.

Government departments delivering essential services are also allowed.

All construction activities are allowed including hardware shops, electrical appliances, bank and banking services, post office, and telegraph, telecommunications.

Commercial vehicles will be allowed only one-fourth capacity, especially for healthcare services and to take people for vaccination centres.
