Kai Havertz speechless after scoring Champions League winner for Chelsea: I waited 15 years for this moment

Kai Havertz was at a loss for words when he was interviewed on the sidelines after scoring the first-half winner for Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League final against Manchester City in Porto.

Kai Havertz found it hard to control his emotions, and his language, as he won the UEFA Champions League for Chelsea by scoring the decisive goal against Manchester City in the final in Porto on Saturday.

Havertz scored for Chelsea in the 42nd-minute as he latched on to Mason Mount’s through pass and evaded goalkeeper Ederson before rolling the ball into an empty net. Chelsea’s record signing thus, became the first player to score his first Champions League goal in a final since Manchester City’s lkay Gündoan in 2013.

Havertz was at a loss for words when he was interviewed on the sidelines before Chelsea players lifted the UCL trophy.

“I don’t know what to say. I really don’t know what to say. I waited a long time. I’ve waited 15 years for this moment and now it’s here,” Havertz said before the presentation ceremony.

The 21-year-old did manage to speak a few words eventually, and even used a few expletives as he lost control for a brief second on air after being reminded of his price tag by the reporter.

“You’re the most expensive player in Chelsea’s history,” the reported quipped to which Havertz said: “I don’t give a f*** about that. I just won the f***ing Champions League.”

Chelsea have now lifted the trophy in 6 of their 7 major European finals in their history – with this their fourth European success after the Champions League (2020-21 & 2011-12) and Europa League (2012-13 & 2018-19).

For Chelsea’s German manager Thomas Tuchel, the Champions League victory comes after his Paris St Germain side suffered defeat in last season’s final against Bayern Munich.

HAVERTZ THE SUPERSTAR

Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta jumped on to Havertz during his pitch side interview and hailed the goal-scorer for his performance on the night.

“He deserves that, tough season, (but) his mentality is top, this guy,” Azpilicueta told BT Sport after busting in on a post-match interview with Havertz.

“He’s going to be a superstar, he is already, he gave us the Champions League. Not only that, he ran like crazy, that’s teamwork, that’s why he deserves this,” he added.

Spain international Azpilicueta has waited a long time to achieve his dream of raising the trophy with Chelsea.

“I came here in 2012 after the Champions League win and of course I wanted to repeat that and tonight, just amazing, my family is here, it’s a special, special day,” he said before the prize-giving ceremony.
