ISRO Launches PSLV-C56 Rocket, Deploys 7 Singaporean Satellites

On July 30, 2023, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) accomplished one more achievement by effectively launching its Polar Satellite launch Vehicle (PSLV-C56) from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The mission expected to send seven Singaporean satellites, including the primary payload DS-SAR, a Radar Imaging Earth observation Satellite, and six co-passenger satellites.

DS-SAR Satellite

The DS-SAR satellite, weighing around 360 kg, was developed in a collaboration with the Government of Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) and ST Engineering. The primary objective of DS-SAR is to help the satellite imagery requirements of various Singaporean government agencies.

It carries a cutting-edge Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) payload developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), enabling all-weather day and night coverage with imaging capabilities at a remarkable 1-meter resolution.

The PSLV-C56 mission also included six co-passenger satellites with unique technological objectives. These satellites are as follows:

  • VELOX-AM: A 23 kg technology showing microsatellite designed for various experiments and research purposes.
  • ARCADE: An experimental satellite focused on atmospheric coupling and dynamics exploration.
  • SCOOB-II: A 3U nanosatellite carrying an innovation demonstrator payload, aiming to validate new space advances.
  • NuLIoN by NuSpace: A advanced 3U nanosatellite facilitating seamless Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity in both urban and remote locations.
  • Galassia-2: A 3U nanosatellite orbiting at low earth orbit for scientific research and data collection purposes.
  • ORB-12 STRIDER: A satellite developed under an international collaboration, though further details are not provided.

This PSLV-C56/DS-SAR mission was conducted under an agreement with New Space India Limited (NSIL), ISRO’s commercial arm. With this launch, ISRO reaffirms its rising impact in the global space industry, fostering partnerships and attracting commercial satellite operators worldwide. The successful deployment of 431 foreign satellites from 36 countries since 1999 highlights ISRO’s growing stature in the space community.

ISRO’s Commercial Launch Activities: The PSLV-C56 mission denotes ISRO’s third commercial launch in 2023. Recently, the organization successfully launched 36 satellites for the UK-based company OneWeb using the LVM3 rocket and orbited two Singaporean satellites, TeLEOS-2 and Lumilite-4, with the PSLV rocket.

Future Missions of ISRO: ISRO’s commitment to space exploration stays unfaltering, with various future missions not too far off. In a short period, they will launch the Aditya L1 spacerocket to study the sun oriented atmosphere from the first Lagrange point (L1) of the Sun-Earth system.

Additionally, ISRO plans to orbit the Anwesha satellite and XPoSAT, a specialized X-Ray Polarimeter Satellite, with the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV). RISAT-1B, a Radar Imaging Satellite, is also planned for launch in the second half of 2023.
