Haseen Dillruba director Vinil Mathew says he would have shot the film differently for OTT

The actors and director of Haseen Dillruba talked about the film in an interview with India Today Television. The film is releasing on Netflix on July 2.

Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey and Harshvardhan Rane’s Haseen Dillruba is releasing on Netflix on July 2. Ahead of the release of the film, the actors along with director Vinil Mathew sat for an interview with India Today Television. During the interview, the actors revealed the reason why they signed the film. Director Vinil Mathew said that while he made some changes in the film during post-production for the OTT audience, he would have shot the film differently had he known that it will release digitally.

Explaining why she signed Haseen Dillruba, Taapsee Pannu said, “You don’t see such an intense love story with a thriller murder mystery. That was my primary reason why I wanted to do this film.”

Vikrant Massey has a similar reason for saying yes to the film. The script attracted the actor and he said that he didn’t think twice before signing Haseen Dillruba. He said, “I was stumped when I read the script first. I have seen a lot of Kanika’s work. I knew what she possessed as a writer. When she came with the film to me, I immediately lapped on to it because I have never played that part. A part like this is an actor’s candy.”

Talking about his film and his fascination with faulty characters, be it Parineeti Chopra in Hasee Toh Phasee or Taapsee Pannu in Haseen Dillruba, Vinil Mathew said, “I really like stories which have faulty characters. If there is something strange about the characters and there is some complexity in the narrative. That’s something I’m naturally drawn to. The fact that you can combine multiple genres into one thing, that challenge itself was quite attractive.”

Harshvardhan Rane will be seen flaunting his chiselled body in Haseen Dillruba. Talking about his character and how he had to work out right before his shot to get that chiselled look, he said, “It’s a little technical thing. My body needs pumping. I am among those who have to workout on the set right before the shot as it is only right after the workout the body looks chiselled. And it is gone after some time. It is about the blood flow.”

Taapsee Pannu’s chemistry with her lead actors, Vikrant Massey and Harshvardhan Rane, is unmissable in the trailer and the songs that have been released. Despite that there were rumours that Harshvardhan and Vikrant were nervous to do intimate scenes with Taapsee. While clarifying the rumours, Harshvardhan praised Taapsee and said, “Taapsee is a very fun person to be around. She laughs more than anyone in the room. She is the happiest and the most hard-working in the room. Nobody needs to be afraid of her.”

Vikrant Massey added, “Harshvardhan and I are the kind of people who like to look after people around them. So is Taapsee. These are clickbait headlines and there’s nothing like this.”

When Vinil Mathew was asked if he tweaked the script to cater to the digital audience, the director said, “I had to change my approach in the post-production, technical things. It’s a different medium and that has to be treated accordingly. I really have to be careful about the fact that an explosion can sound like a bubble wrap bursting on a laptop. You have an intense background music which has more than a hundred fifty instruments playing. And you know that a laptop or a smartphone won’t accommodate so much bandwidth in terms of sound. So you have to compress it. You have to decide what you want in the background and what you want in the foreground. Same goes for colour-correction.”

He added, “Had I known that the film will release on an OTT platform while shooting, I would have shot it a little differently.”

Haseen Dillruba is a thriller with comic elements. It is releasing on Netflix on July 2.
