Govt defends 2% digital tax opposed by US, Google, Facebook

Commerce Secretary Anup Wadhawan defended the 2% equalisation duty on foreign e-commerce companies that faces opposition from Google, Facebook and the United States Trade Representative. “If there is an economic benefit from a certain jurisdiction, there has to be some taxation in that jurisdiction,” he said. He added that a bilateral trade agreement with the US is in the works.
