The tensions has led to confrontations between protesters and police forces. At Columbia officers clad in riot gear forcibly entered Hamilton Hall breaking up the demonstration and arresting scores of students.

Similar scenes played out at City College of New York, where law enforcement officials dispersed protesters and erected barricades.

The protests have not gone unnoticed by political leaders, with Mayor Eric Adams of New York City condemning the demonstrators’ conduct and urging students to disperse.

President Joe Biden’s administration has also weighed in criticizing the tactics employed by protesters and addressing the need for peaceful protests.

With some accusing demonstrators of crossing the line into anti-Semitism and hate speech. University administrators have faced pressure to take action against protesters, including threats of expulsion for those who refuse to vacate occupied premises.

University administrations, including Columbia’s president Minouche Shafik, have rejected these demands citing concerns about the disruption caused by the protests and risks to campus security.

President Joe Biden’s administration, which criticized the demonstrations as “absolutely the wrong approach.”

Meanwhile, the United Nations’ human rights chief, Volker Turk, expressed concern over the use of force to disperse peaceful protests.
