On August 22, 2024, Rafiqul Islam, the father of one of the deceased from the protest filed a murder case in Dhaka. Shakib Al Hasan along with 155 others including former ministers and lawmakers were named in the case.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto played a main role in rallying the team around Shakib Al Hasan. In a Facebook post, Shanto expressed his disbelief at the allegations describing the murder case against Shakib Al Hasan as unexpected.
Shanto highlighted Shakib Al Hasan’s contributions to Bangladesh over the past 17 years, stating that he has raised the name of Bangladesh in the world.
After Bangladesh’s Test victory against Pakistan, Shanto dedicated the win to the victims of the protests. Batsman Mushfiqur Rahim also took to social media to express his support for Shakib.
Rahim referred to Shakib as both a teammate and a brother stating that he would stand by him during this tough period. Rahim dismissed the allegations as false, vouching for Shakib’s character and insisting that he would never engage in inhumane actions.
Among the many individuals implicated in legal cases is Shakib Al Hasan, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Hasina’s Awami League.
Shakib Al Hasan has been named in a murder case related to the death of Nayeem Howlader, a 17-year-old student who died during the anti-quota protests in Dhaka’s Jatrabari area on July 19.
The case was filed by the victim’s father, Kamrul Islam, who accused 192 people including Shakib.
Supporters of Shakib Al Hasan including journalists and fellow cricketers have decried the charges as baseless and politically motivated.
They argue that Shakib Al Hasan was in Canada playing league cricket at the time of the incident and could not have been involved in the events leading to the student’s death.
The new regime has brought similar charges against figures including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul and several senior leaders of the Awami League.
The sweeping nature of these accusations has instilled a sense of fear across the country. Many view these actions as part of a politics of vengeance driven by leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Jamaat-e-Islami.

On August 27, 2024, he played a main role in Bangladesh’s 10-wicket victory over Pakistan in the first Test of a two-match series. This win is Bangladesh’s first-ever Test victory against Pakistan with Shakib Al Hasan contributing huge by taking three second-innings wickets.
Shakib Al Hasan is an important figure in Bangladesh cricket with record that includes 4,520 runs in 68 Test matches and 2,241 wickets as a spinner, making him the highest wicket-taker for Bangladesh in Test cricket.
In the first Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, Shakib Al Hasan’s performance was instrumental in Bangladesh’s 10-wicket victory, their first-ever Test win against Pakistan. He took three crucial wickets in the second innings helping to dismiss Pakistan for just 146 runs.
Shakib Al Hasan has faced several disciplinary actions in the past including bans related to corruption and on-field behavior.
Most recently after the match against Pakistan, Shakib was fined 10% of his match fee and received a demerit point for throwing a ball over the head of Pakistani player Mohammad Rizwan.
Shakib Al Hasan found himself in hot water during the Rawalpindi Test due to an incident involving Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan. Shakib threw the ball at Rizwan after the latter backed away from the crease.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) fined Shakib 10% of his match fee and handed him a demerit point for breaching the Code of Conduct for throwing the ball in an inappropriate and dangerous manner.
Both Bangladesh and Pakistan were penalized for slow over rates during the match resulting in the loss of World Test Championship points for both teams.
