Astro Bot is a 3D platformer that embraces PlayStation’s 30-year history. The game takes players on a journey to rescue 300 Astro Bots, many of whom are disguised as iconic characters from PlayStation’s past.

These cameos from classic titles like Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter and Ape Escape remind players of their experiences with PlayStation through the decades.

Although it’s approachable enough for younger or inexperienced gamers, it’s also designed with seasoned players in mind. The game provides skill-driven challenges that make it enjoyable for all age groups.

The game leverages PlayStation’s gaming history by incorporating recognizable characters and settings. For example, Astro wields Kratos’ ax from God of War in one level.

More than just a mascot, Astro interacts with classic PlayStation characters. The game features bots inspired by characters from Capcom, Sega and Konami.

Astro’s basic abilities include a punch, hover and spin move. These are easy to learn but challenging to master, allowing for precise control and satisfying interactions with enemies and environments.

As players progress, Astro acquires new abilities that are essential for overcoming specific challenges in each level. These includes, Spring-Loaded Gloves used to bounce or punch enemies, these gloves offer a twist on traditional combat mechanics.

Astro can inflate himself like a balloon. Shrinking Mouse Backpack allows Astro to shrink down and access hidden areas.

Swimming Booster propels Astro forward in water, giving him enhanced mobility. Time-Freezing Stopwatch helps players solve puzzles that require precise timing.

Players explore six different galaxies each containing its own distinct planets and challenges. The game offers a total of 50 planets each filled with hidden collectibles, secret passages and creative platforming sections.

From spooky castles to neon-lit casinos and cosmic space stations each level gives a fresh visual style and new mechanics. No two levels feel the same and the diversity keeps players engaged throughout.

Many stages introduce mechanics that tie directly into the environment such as a haunted castle with invisible platforms or a day/night button that changes the layout of the floors and walls.

The level design never feels repetitive and each area is tailored to the specific mechanics introduced. The game is full of hidden bots and collectibles.

Players who enjoy exploration and completionist playstyles will find satisfaction in uncovering every secret. The design ensures that players are rewarded for their curiosity.

The story revolves around Astro rescuing his 300 robot friends, who have been scattered across six galaxies after an alien attack on their PS5 spaceship.

While the plot is straightforward, it provides enough structure to keep players motivated. Astro and his robot friends are irresistibly cute. Their expressive animations such as Astro’s shivering in the cold or quivering in fear make them endearing companions on this journey.

Astro Bot takes full advantage of the PS5’s DualSense controller. Every surface Astro interacts with is represented through haptics raindrops on Astro’s umbrella feel lifelike on the controller and skating on ice provides tactile feedback that makes you feel every twist and turn.

The controller’s built-in speaker enhances the experience with environmental sounds that perfectly complement the on-screen action. Players are fully immersed in the game’s world through both physical and auditory feedback.

While some levels require high levels of precision, the game is never punishing. Frequent checkpoints ensure players are never too far from their last attempt and failure costs nothing but time.

For players who enjoy mastering every aspect of a game, Astro Bot provides plenty of hidden areas and collectibles. Speedrunners will also find joy in the responsive controls and the possibility of shaving seconds off their time through clever shortcuts and optimized movement.

Each galaxy contains a boss fight that guards a piece of the PS5 spaceship. These bosses are varied and challenging requiring players to use Astro’s full range of abilities to defeat them.

From wielding Kratos’ ax to navigating levels based on PlayStation games, Astro Bot contains numerous moments that will stick with players long after they’ve completed the game.

Every pixel in Astro Bot has been crafted. The environments are filled with details that make them feel alive. Whether it’s the physics of an inflatable daisy collapsing under Astro’s feet or the sheen of neon lights in a casino.

The physics in the game are just as impressive as the graphics. Astro’s interactions with his surroundings are realistic and every surface he touches reacts in a way that feels tangible and satisfying.

Completing the main storyline takes roughly nine hours, but the game is packed with additional content. There are 300 bots to rescue and players will likely need around 18 hours in total to achieve 100% completion.

After the main story, players can access challenging trial stages that test their skills even further. These levels are tougher than the main stages.

One of the elements of Astro Bot’s production is how efficiently it was developed. Doucet explained that the game was created in just three-and-a-half years by a team of around 65 people.

Astro Bot is divided into 50 short stages each of which can be easily swapped around and tweaked. This modular approach allowed the development team to remain flexible and make changes without the challenges of adhering to a complex, singular storyline.
