ANUPAM KHER VS NASEERUDDIN SHAH CONTROVERSY
In an interview in January 2020, Naseeruddin Shah had called Anupam Kher a sycophant and a clown for the latter’s pro-government stance on social media. Naseeruddin has told The Wire, “Someone like Anupam Kher has been very vocal. I don’t think he needs to be taken seriously. He’s a clown. Any number of his contemporaries from NSD and FTII can attest to his sycophantic nature. It’s in his blood, he can’t help it.”
Kher was agitated to hear such words from Naseeruddin and decided to retaliate in his own way. He took to social media and released a long video in reply to the senior actor’s comments. Kher took a jibe at Shah’s ‘don’t take him seriously’ comment and said that he, or the other people Shah has criticized, do not take him seriously either. In the video, he had said, “Despite achieving so much success, you have spent your entire life in frustration. If you can criticize Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Shah Rukh Khan, and Virat Kohli, then I am sure I am in great company.”
In his interview, Naseeruddin had talked about the protests against the CAA, about many Bollywood stars keeping mum over the issue and also about the student protests and actress Deepika Padukone’s show of solidarity at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The senior actor had lauded Deepika for taking a step like this being at the top stage of her career.
Naseeruddin Shah’s condition, meanwhile, is stable. According to reports, the actor was hospitalised after a patch was found in his lungs. His wife Ratna Pathak Shah and his children are by his side.
