AHMEDABAD: Thanks to the city’s Olympic bid, a local area plan for areas around the upcoming world-class Naranpura sports complex is being readied. To start with, the humble 12-metre wide approach road to the complex is being widened to 24 metres, while three other approach roads of 9-12 meters have been provided.
The sports facilities inside the complex have also been given their final shape. The Rs 458 crore multi-sport complex for athletics at Shastrinagar area was not discussed much in the state sports, youth and cultural department.
Aquatic sports facilities which include swimming, water polo, will be part of the complex. The 19 acre campus will also house 16 courts that can interchange for badminton, volleyball and basketball sports. “The plan has been finalised and work will begin soon. We are ensuring that the sports complex gets integrated into the community. We will hold local sports events at marginal rates,” said an AMC official.
The large plot behind Vardan Tower in Shastrinagar has been earmarked for the complex. The Naranpura sports complex will be part of the sports enclave in Motera. The facility is within 5km of the main Motera complex, which is a requirement by IOC, said a civic body official.
The complex will be spread over 89,000 square metres with sporting facilities on 77,000 square metres. There will be an Olympic-size athletics track, eight tennis courts including one for international tennis matches. There will be two swimming pools for events and a special track and field facility.
“The Naranpura sports local area plan will also incorporate a plan to boost local real estate,” added the AMC official.
