Aamir Khan refused to play Sunil Dutt in Sanju. On Tuesday Trivia

Ranbir Kapoor-starrer Sanju released 3 years ago today, on June 29, 2018. While Paresh Rawal essayed the role of Sunil Dutt, it was Aamir Khan who was offered the role first.

Ican’t do any other role but Sanjay Dutt’s,” Aamir Khan had once said during an interaction with the media in 2018. The actor wanted to play Sanjay Dutt but instead was offered the role of Sunil Dutt in Ranbir Kapoor’s Sanju, which released 3 years ago today.

On June 29, 2018, we all got a glimpse of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt’s life in Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju. Women, guns and, of course, Bollywood films were the main focus of the film. As Ranbir Kapoor essayed the titular role to the T, the audience was fascinated by the turbulent life story of one of Bollywood’s most controversial and successful actors, Sanjay Dutt.

Apart from the script and plot, what also seemed to impress fans was the casting. Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt was believable if not extraordinary. And while Ranbir played junior Dutt, the role of Sanjay Dutt’s father, Sunil Dutt, was essayed by Paresh Rawal. However, did you know he was not the first choice for the role? We tell you all about it on three years of Sanju – on Tuesday Trivia.

Mr Perfectionist of Bollywood, Aamir Khan, is one of Rajkumar Hirani’s favorite actors and the duo has worked together in several blockbuster projects, including PK and 3 Idiots. However, this time around, Aamir was not happy with the role he was offered and hence he turned it down.

In an interview with NDTV in 2018, Aamir revealed that he did not want to play the role of Sanjay’s father but Sanjay himself, and hence, he did not take it up. The actor said that he did not want to be on the sets and think that Ranbir’s lines should have been his.

“I can’t do any other role but Sanjay Dutt’s,” Aamir Khan had said during an interaction with the media in 2018.

“Dutt Saab’s role is a fabulous role. There is so much about Sanju’s relationship with his father, but Sanju’s role is unbelievable. I told Raju that role had won my heart. In this film, I can’t do any other role apart from Sanjay Dutt’s, which I can’t do because Ranbir is doing. So don’t offer me any other role. I can’t come to a set thinking and be looking at Ranbir and be like, hmmm.. these should be my lines,” Aamir had further said.

Of course, Aamir Khan had his eyes on Sanjay Dutt’s role. But there was another reason why the Laal Singh Chaddha actor refused Sanju, and Rajkumar Hirani revealed the same in an interview with Filmfare. Aamir turned down Sunil Dutt’s role because he did not want to play another aged character after Dangal. Hirani, in the interview, revealed that he had just gone to Aamir to narrate the script, but he had no intention of asking him to play a role. However, he ended up asking Aamir about Sunil Dutt’s role, which the actor swiftly turned down.

“Aamir is a friend. Whenever I write a script, I just go to him and narrate it to get a reaction from him. So I narrated this script also. Not with the intention of asking him to play any role. He reacted interestingly to the script and liked it. Then just out of greed, I asked Aamir if he would play Dutt saab’s role? He took it seriously and gave it a thought. He said let’s meet after a while.” Hirani continued, “So I met him the next week again. Then he showed me Dangal and said, ‘Look I’m already playing an older man’s role. And if after Dangal, my next film has me play an older man again, then people will stop giving me a young man’s role!’ That was a valid argument. Finally, we had Pareshji (Rawal) playing Dutt saab,” he was quoted saying.

While Rajkumar Hirani was fixed on casting Ranbir Kapoor, producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra had a different take on the casting. He wanted Ranveer Singh and not Ranbir Kapoor to be cast in and as Sanju. Chopra once revealed that he felt that Ranveer had the flamboyance and the emotional depth the character demanded. However, later they ended up casting Ranbir Kapoor.

3 years later, we can still debate whether Sanju was a true and real representation of Sanjay Dutt’s life still. But on the casting front, we’re glad it was Ranbir Kapoor playing Sanjay Dutt on screen.
